- Several swimsuits
- Hiking shoes
- Mosquito repellent
- Raincoat (May thru November)
- Personal toiletries
- Extra cash for souvenirs, extra meals on departure/arrival days & for anything else
- Shorts/ T-shirts and outfits for dinner
- Alarm Clock
- Anything you can’t be without, bring it!
2. Are tips included?
Tips are not included. Please keep in mind that it is optional but customary to tip your surf instructors and the rest of the staff. It is totally up to the customer to tip at the end of the trip or not.
3. What is the weather like in Costa Rica?
This tropical paradise is blessed with wonderful weather throughout the year. There are two main reasons: 1) Summer from December to May and 2) the green season beginning in June until the end of November. The temperature is very stable, varying from 20°C to 30°C (about 80 to 90°F).
4. Can you tell me a little about the Costa Rican economy?
The Costa Rican economy is based mainly on ecotourism, as well as the export of crops such as coffee, bananas, flowers, and products of high technology. Despite the country’s small size, it is estimated Costa Rica possesses 5% of the world’s biodiversity. The strategic position between North and South America, the beautiful climate, and the conservation efforts made by the government, are some of the characteristics that contribute to its natural richness. Costa Rica is proud that 25% of its territory is protected by the National park system. Amongst the ecosystems protected by the national parks, you will find rain forests, cloud forests, dry forests, coral reefs, mangroves. The flora and fauna are extraordinary. In the rain forests, for example, you can find many endangered species such as monkeys, macaws, jaguars, sloths, tapirs, and poison frogs. Surfing is an incredible experience, with river mouth breaks, beach breaks, and reef breaks close to the area, you can’t fail to be impressed!! Costa Rica has so much to offer … it is a country that will turn your vacation into the trip of your dreams, filled with new experiences, new friends, and a lifetime of memories.
5. What is the Costa Rican currency?
In Costa Rica we use colons, but you can bring American dollars and they will take them everywhere. So don’t worry about where to find them, just make sure that you have small bills such as 10′s – 20′s and 50′s. Most places won’t take $100 USD bills.
6. What is the perfect time to arrive at the camp?
Saturday at any time. Camps start on Sunday morning. Saturday night lodging & dinner is included in your price, that way you can settle in, meet your host & other campers for the week before your camp starts the next morning.
7. When should I book my returning flight?
We recommend that you book your flight for the afternoon or evening of the day after you finish the program. Your lodging for that night is also included. For example, if you book a 7-day camp you should get here on Saturday, start on Sunday morning and finish camp the next Friday night and leave on Saturday. However, remember that it is a 2-hour drive from Jaco to San Jose so you can leave on the same day if you book a flight in the afternoon. If you have a morning flight you should probably book your flight for Sunday and spend the last night (Saturday) in San Jose.
8. What if I can’t start on Sunday?
If you need to ask for a different day to arrive or start the camp, just let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
9. What if I’m traveling alone?
That is perfectly OK, BigFishCostaRica comes with built-in friends! We have a lot of other solo travelers from all over the world. You may come alone, but you will leave with friends for life.
10. What’s the best way to reserve and pay for the vacation?
The best way to reserve and pay for the vacation would be with our online reservations page. Here you can select the dates you would like to arrive and the form of payment and it will be automated through our trusted host. Rest assured we keep all your information private. If you are more comfortable with booking for the trip through other means, feel free to let us know and we will accommodate all your needs.
11. What are the local Costa Ricans like?
We are described as the friendliest people in the Americas. We always give you a big smile and make you feel at home. “Pura Vida” is heard everywhere you go. This expression, translated to “Pure Life,” summarizes our way of life.
